THE STORY OF
BATANG KALI
ABOUT US
We are the students of PR campaign from New Era College, Kajang. In line with our mission i.e. “From the community, for the community”, we will use the knowledge and theories we have learnt from the course and put them into the events we are going to organise.
This time, we choose Batang Kali Village as the place to carry out our event. Twenty-one of us, including lecturer and students, will explore the village to discover its beauty. We will draw a map of Batang Kali and record all the events that have taken place here with the help of photographs. We will also shoot a documentary of about 20 minutes to promote Batang Kali. It is hoped that more people will get to know this place through our activities.
In addition, we will conduct a tour to relate the stories which belong exclusively to Batang Kali. Our event shall include watching and sharing the documentary, stories, stage performance, workshop on the making of Lor Mee, etc.
Through this simple tour, we hope to free you temporarily from your busy schedule and bring you to this quiet village to enjoy and appreciate its beauty and the passion of the village folks.
ABOUT BATANG KALI
The Batang Kali Village, a village built on the hillside, appears severe and transquil. Located at the fringe if an urban town, the villager enjoy a peaceful life and yet they have never shun outsiders. They are indeed the living ‘history books’ who here recorded many past historical events that have taken place in the village.
There are no colourful murals nor high-rise buildings in Batang Kali, but it has a unique culture history and many unrevealed stories unknown to many in the country. The shops making traditional papier mache as offering and the “Mua Lao” biscuits which the Hokkien people made as part of their dowry are some of the special features in Batang Kali. These sunset industries did not close down as time passes, nevertheless they might soon be forgotten as the residents move out of the village over time.
Who will be held responsible if such cultural and humanistic heritage disappears in the future? As such. we intend to record and share the unique cultural values of the village with as many people as possible.
With the skills and knowledge we have learnt from the classroom, we sincerely hope that we will we able to make a little contribution to the village of Batang Kali.
